This workshop is designed for photographers who want to use creativity in capturing striking images of flowers. The class will emphasize creativity through composition, the use of light and background control, photographing with props, close-up photography, and photo enhancement software. Class time will include instruction, instructor critiques, personal attention, and shooting time in the Garden Court, World Desert, and Jungle.

Note: Participants should have a working knowledge of their camera, and some activities are NOT applicable to point–n–shoot cameras.

NATURE AND THE GREAT OUTDOORS

This workshop is for photo enthusiasts who want to capture striking images of the Adkins Arboretum’s gardens and preserve, outdoor subjects and natural landscapes. Through an illustrated digital lecture, graphic handouts, and shooting sessions with the instructor, participants will gain knowledge and techniques to improve their level of photography. The workshop emphasizes techniques for seeing and capturing exciting photographic images of flowers, critters, and landscapes. In addition, participants will learn and apply compositional elements, capture close-ups, and use basic photographic equipment to get the best possible images.  The workshop will conclude with a critique of participants’ photographs and an introduction to photo editing software.

Note: While point-n-shoot cameras are welcome, please be reminded that these cameras have limited options.

CAPTURE WASHINGTON WITH YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA

A practical workshop for digital photographers of any level who want to sharpen their photography skills and digital techniques to bring out the best in their images. Through hands-on activities, an illustrated digital lecture, graphic handouts, and demonstrations, participants learn how to capture the majestic Washington skyline and monuments. Emphasis is on composition, lenses, white balance settings as built-in filters, and low-light photography. During on-location shooting sessions on the National Mall, the National World War II Memorial, and Jefferson, Lincoln, and FDR Memorials, the instructor will offer guidance and photographic support to help participants capture the evening glow of the Nation’s Capital and get the most from their digital cameras. The last session is a formal critique of participants’ photographs.

Corey Hilz and Josh Taylor are leading a three-session workshop at Brookside Gardens. Brookside offers a diverse collection of plants and landscaping. It's a location where you can always find fresh photographic material; new combinations of shape, texture and color. This workshop will emphasize techniqes for capturing all elements of a garden, from landscape details to flowers and insects. The illustrated lectures and handouts will give you new ideas for using compositional elements. The presentations will also share tips and techniques for working with your digital images using photo enhancing software. Participants will be able to work with both Josh and Corey in small groups. The morning sessions will be in the gardens while the light is soft and warm. On Saturday, part of the time will be spent photographing butterflies in the Conservatory. We'll have exclusive access to the Conservatory before it is open to the public and will be able to use tripods during this time. Corey and Josh will work with you individually to answer questions, clarify concepts and suggest ways to infuse creativity into your image making. Come spend a stimulating weekend with two entusiastic photographers who will help you improve your skills and abilities as a photographer.

Photograph colorful butterflies in Brookside Gardens’ Conservatory and blooming flowers in the outdoor garden spaces. In a two-session workshop, learn how to capture striking images of butterflies and flowers. The focus of the workshop will be on butterfly and garden photography and the use of basic photographic equipment to capture memorable images. The workshop will include illustrated handouts and prints and a two-hour shooting session in the Conservatory with the instructor.  The final session of the workshop will be a formal critique of participants’ photographs.  Participants should have a working knowledge of their camera. A tripod is optional, but highly recommended. While point-n-shoot cameras are welcome, please be reminded that these cameras have limited options.

Spend the morning photographing acres of blooming sunflowers for as far as the eye can see. Josh, a photo instructor at Ace Photo, will show you how to capture stunning images and get the best possible pictures of sunflowers from basic photo equipment. There is no place with such an offering of sunflowers for every photographic style. Unique photographic opportunities abound for sunrise landscape images, close-ups, and HDR photography. Participants should have working knowledge of their camera, so time in the field can be spent on getting the most from the photographic opportunity rather than learning camera operation.

 

Two images from the photo shoot can be e-mailed to the instructor for a written critique.

To help you capture the best possible image, the following is recommended:

¥ A wide angle or wide angle zoom lens in the 17-55mm range to capture landscape views of the

  sunflowers

¥ A telephoto/zoom lens in the 300mm range to capture intimate views of sunflowers 
¥ A macro lens or a lens with macro capability to capture close-ups of sunflowers
¥ Polarizing filter
¥ Reflector or a piece of aluminum foil to bounce light into flowers
¥ Suitable footwearÉit can be wet and muddy! No place for sandals!
¥ Hat, long sleeve shirt, and long pants for insect protection

¥ Visitors to the management area should be aware of biting insects, mosquitoes and ticks from

   April-December.

Josh, a photo instructor at Ace Photo, will show you how to capture stunning images and get the best possible pictures from basic photo equipment. The annual lotus blossoms are truly a unique photo opportunity.
